NAO is a singer, songwriter and producer from East London.
After gaining a jazz degree from Guildhall and working as a session musician for many years, Nao uploaded her first solo songs ‘Back Porch’ and ‘So Good’ in 2014. ‘So Good’ was something of a phenomenon, gaining a Zane Lowe ‘Hottest Record’ on the day it was uploaded, reaching #1 on HypeMachine and quickly clocking up 1m plays on Soundcloud. Off the back of that success NAO booked a first show at Electrowerkz, selling out in 2 days.
In 2015 Nao released two EPs independently on her own label Little Tokyo Recordings. Her second EP ‘February 15’ received a glowing review from Pitchfork and two of the tracks - Inhale Exhale and Zilllionaire - were playlisted at Radio 1. She then came 3rd in BBC’s Sound of 2016 and had her first breakthrough song 'Bad Blood' which was featured on a T-Mobile commercial in the Superbowl and stands at over 30m streams.
Nao's critically-acclaimed debut album was released in July 2016 on Little Tokyo/RCA and reached #13 on the UK album chart. Jungle, Grades and Royce Wood Junior are among the many producers who worked on the album, which features A. K. Paul and Abhi/Dijon.
European and N.American tours followed including 2 sold out Shepherds Bush Empire shows in London and a sold out Music Hall Of Williamsburg in New York. Nao also played 3 shows at Glastonbury 2016, inc a performance to 10,000 people at the Park Stage. Following her success in 2016 she was nominated for the Best British Female category at The Brit Awards and Mobo Awards. Again in 2017 she was nomimated for a Mobo, this time as Best RnB Act.
In 2018 Nao released her first single 'Another Lifetime' from her second album (name to be announced.
As A Songwriter/Featured Artist
As a writer, Nao has credits on two platinum UK #1 albums, Disclosure's Caracal (for Superego) and Stormzy's Gang Signs and Prayer (for Velvet).
She also features on the sleeper hit Firefly which she co-wrote with Mura Masa in 2015. Firefly has never been promoted at radio yet has more than 100m streams across DSPs globally and remains the closing song in both Mura Masa and Nao's live shows.
